Minigrid

Solar mini-grids are not a new concept worldwide, but they are an increasingly popular way to provide low-cost reliable electricity to rural areas. … A small powerhouse is lined with inverters and batteries that can store enough energy for electricity, even during the rainy season.

How do rural areas get electricity?
There are other possibilities for providing electricity in rural areas. In many areas where electricity is required and there is no grid within easy reach then a localized grid (or micro-grid) can be established using a local power source such as solar-based micro or mini-grid

How do mini-grids work?
A mini-grid is a set of small-scale solar power plants and possibly energy storage systems interconnected to a distribution network that supplies electricity to a small, localized group of customers and operates independently. Mini-grids can serve a wide range of customers.

The advantage of a solar mini-grid is that it can meet higher energy demands by for instance local businesses. A solar mini-grid boosts business activities in rural areas, but can only be realized economically if the distance between clients is relatively small and there is sufficient electrical demand.

What is the importance of rural electrification?
Rural electrification with the use of renewable energies or hybrid systems improves the individual quality of life, facilitates community services such as health and education (consumption use), and enables business entities to carry out professional activities (productive use) for rural populations.
